What The Dickens – Review

What the Dickens: The Story of a Rogue Tooth Fairy by Gregory Maguire

Age: Juvenile

During a dangerously dark and stormy night, Dinah and her siblings sit close with their elder cousin, Gage, to listen to a story about What the Dickens, an orphan skibbereen and his discovery and adventures of his lineage as a member of the tooth fairy society that lives in the imagination of a child’s mind.

I didn’t realize this was a children’s book when I first picked it up at the library. I found it on the shelves at the Friends of the Library Booksale area. I recognized the author who has also written the Wicked series. Despite this being a children’s dark fairy tale, I really enjoyed the story of What the Dickens and the skibereen. I thought Maguire created the perfectly creepy atmosphere needed for the story, and I love how the narrator Gage was able to tie in the circumstances to the night’s events to the characters and events in the story he told his younger cousins. I think this makes a great book for Halloween, or for a rainy night in general. Children will love the story and the characters and parents will love the humor and wit in the narration.
